A small earthquake has been recorded in the North Sea around 40 miles off the coast of Norfolk.

The 3.2 magnitude tremor was detected by the British Geological Survey at around 7:14am on Sunday (February 12) at a depth of around 10 kilometers.

The epicentre was around 60 miles from Cromer.

Small quakes are common across the UK with up to 300 recorded every year, although very few are powerful enough to be felt by humans.

The British Isles are far from any major fault lines between tectonic plates, so the main cause of earthquakes is thought to be the land rising up after the melting of the ice sheets that covered much of the area during the last ice age.
