Norwich man jailed for breaching sexual harm prevention order
He was found to be using an app designed to hide a person's internet history
A Norwich man has been jailed for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
35 year old Christopher Maddison, of Sycamore Crescent, was jailed for two years during an appearance at Norwich Crown Court on Thursday 30 November 2023.
He'd previously admitted four breaches of an SHPO at an earlier court hearing.
It's after a police officer, who was out on patrol in Norwich in November, spotted Maddison using a smart phone and searched the device.
Concerned about the contents of the phone and Maddison’s use of the device, police carried out an unannounced visit to his home on 16 November and asked to see his electronic devices, in line with his SHPO.
He handed over a basic mobile telephone, and told officers he'd sold the smart phone online.
Police pressed Maddison, repeatedly asked for his smart phone - he handed it over 10 minutes later.
Not handing over the phone when asked to do so by police meant he was in breach of two conditions on his SHPO.
Officers also discovered a laptop at the property, despite his claims there weren't any other devices there.
After examining the smartphone, police found an email written by Maddison of a sexual nature and a browser application designed to hide the user’s internet browsing activity - these were both also breaches of his SHPO.
He was arrested on suspicion of breaching a SHPO and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
He was later charged with four breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order on 16 November 2023.
The original SHPO was made at court on 28 July 2015.
