Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens has welcomed Raja, a two-year-old male Sumatran Tiger, who has arrived from Frankfurt Zoo as part of a global effort to protect the critically endangered species.

With fewer than 400 Sumatran Tigers remaining in the wild, Raja’s arrival marks a significant step in international conservation. He will form part of a carefully managed breeding programme and is expected to be joined later this year by a female as part of these efforts.

Zoological Director Scott Bird said: “We’re delighted to welcome Raja to Thrigby Hall. He’s an impressive young tiger and will play an important role in the future of his species.”

Raja is settling in well and has already shown a confident and inquisitive nature. Visitors may be able to see him exploring his new habitat, although he may also spend time in off-show areas as he acclimatises.

His arrival follows the loss of Thrigby’s previous male tiger, Kubu, in March, and has been eagerly anticipated by both staff and the public.
