Repairs to the Grade II listed former post office in Lowestoft to conserve the building are now underway.

The renovations to the building are part of East Suffolk Council's High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) project, specifically on Lowestoft's London Road.

Once the repairs to the building's facade have been completed in the early summer, the former post office will be used in a new way, plans of which have yet to be announced.

An iconic staple of Lowestoft, the building on London Road North was built to serve as a central post office for the area in the 1880s.

Planning permission was granted for a restoration of the front of the building to its original design, whilst improving the ramp in order to facilitate easy access for those less able.

Funding for the renovations has been allocated partly through the Towns Fund from the central government, alongside the HSHAZ - currently financed by East Suffolk Council and Historic England.

Speaking about the repair work, East Suffolk’s Deputy Leader and cabinet member for Economic Development, Cllr Craig Rivett welcomed the initiative.

“This restoration work will greatly improve the appearance of this symbolic Lowestoft building and ensure it can be enjoyed in years to come. We are also looking forward to inviting local residents to learn more about heritage conservation as part of this restoration work,” he said.
