Plans for a major new housing development next to the main Norfolk coast road have been approved.

Lovell Partnerships and Le Strange Estates have been given permission to build 160 properties beside the A149 King’s Lynn Road on the outskirts of Hunstanton.

The area is popular with second home owners but some of the properties will have a restriction on them meaning they must be main residences and cannot be used as holiday lets.

The development, on land south of the Hunstanton Commercial Park, will feature 60 homes, 61 ‘housing with care’ apartments and 39 ‘care ready’ bungalows.

The project was given the green light by West Norfolk Council’s planning committee on Monday.

The care apartments will be built in a single block, with accommodation and facilities under one roof, supporting people as they get older.

Some 50pc of the total homes will be affordable.

Conservative councillor Carol Bower said: “As the ward councillor for Hunstanton I 100pc support this application.

“It is very much needed: 50pc affordable housing – we need that. We need a sustainable location, all the landscaping has been very carefully thought out to give minimal harm to anything in the vicinity and it has been carefully planned.”
