Plans to build almost 50 new apartments at the site of the former library in Hunstanton have been abandoned, with a new building including a library and public toilets planned instead.

The site on Westgate, next to the bus station, was granted planning permission for new homes and shop in March 2021.

However West Norfolk Council says rising costs and changes to fire regulations mean the previous plan is no longer viable.

An alternative proposal includes a replacement for the former library which was knocked down last year, coupled with a new information centre, public toilets and changing rooms.

There are also plans to improve the neighbouring bus station.

West Norfolk councillor Richard Blunt said:

“Given the impact of external factors on this site, which have made it unviable to build homes on it, it is good to see a new proposal, which will have benefits both for Hunstanton and the north of the borough generally.

“I look forward to discussing with colleagues in detail at our R&D and cabinet meetings.”
