A man who damaged a police car which has been out of action for seven days in Norwich has been jailed.

Andrew Yallop, 32, of Bethel Street appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Monday (3 November) where he pleaded guilty to criminal damage to property.

This follows an incident that happened on 31 October at 3:20pm when Yallop used a brick to smash the front passenger window of a marked police car parked outside Bethel Street Police Station. The vehicle’s wing mirror was also damaged.

After causing the damage, Yallop walked into the Public Enquiry Centre at the station and told an officer what he had done.

He was arrested and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and later charged.

During his court appearance he was handed a two-month prison sentence and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154.

Norwich Investigating officer PC Elvis Beya said: “Our vehicles are a vital resource. The damage to this police car means that it has been out of action for seven days, which impacts our ability to respond to incidents and can delay help to those who need it most.”
