A Norwich man has been jailed for seven and a half years after launching an 'unprovoked' attack on another man during a night out.

Achilles Lawrence Gate’te, 19, of Cunningham Road, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court yesterday (June 22).

He'd apporached his victim on St Vedast Street in Norwich on March 19 2022 at around 2am.

The victim, in his 20s, was waiting for a taxi with friends when he was approached by Gate’te and a second man - Codie Marjoram.

There was then a fight between the two groups which left the victim in Addenbrooke's Hospital with lift threatening injuries.

Gate’te was later detained for being drunk and disorderly but was later linked with the assault.

Both men were charged with one count of grievous bodily harm with intent and three counts of assault by beating and remanded into custody.

In an impact statement, the victim said: "I will never be able to reach my full potential. I will never be the person I could have been."

"I feel like a lesser version of myself in every way. I am overwhelmed with sadness and grief for the loss of my pre-injury life and career."

DS Lee Marriner, who led the investigation for Norfolk Police, said “This was a horrendous assault within the night-time economy of Norwich where the victim nearly lost his life.

“During the course of the investigation it was established that Achilles-Gate was determined to be involved in violence that evening. He was involved in a number of incidents prior to and post this assault which left the victim with permanent life changing injuries.

“I would like to praise the victim for his resilience and bravery over the last year. Due to this assault his life has been changed forever by the actions of Achilles Gate. Norfolk Police welcome the sentence today.”

19 year old Codie Marjoram, of Calthorpe Road in Norwich, was convicted of assault and jailed for three months in April.

He was released having already served a year on curfew.
