A marathon event which saw hundreds of people run a route between Sea Palling and Sheringham last year has been cancelled.

North Norfolk District Council says its no longer viable to hold the 'Mammoth Marathon' which was only launched last year, after multiple delays because of Covid-19.

This year's event was due to take place on May 14.

The council says it doesn't think it can make the event successful because there are too many alternative marathons across East Anglia.

The number of runners who've signed up for this year is said to be 'lower than anticipated'.

Runners who've signed up have been contacted and are being promised a full refund.

Councillor Virginia Gay, a cabinet member responsible for leisure at North Norfolk District Council, said:

“It is a great shame that we have had to cancel the upcoming Mammoth Marathon, which is unfortunate, but a decision we must take.

The events landscape in Norfolk is very rich with opportunities to take part in competitive or recreational activities such as organised runs, and we have not seen the take up in participants that we would have liked.

Contrastingly, I am delighted that North Norfolk is host to such a variety of activities and events for residents and visitors to partake in – sports and leisure are key to our quality of life.

We look forward to bringing more events to our wonderful district in the future, such as an entry-level triathlon planned for later this year.”
