Rules on dogs at beaches, fields, and public spaces across north Norfolk are being reviewed.

North Norfolk District Council is considering renewing Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) which either ban dogs entirely in certain areas or require them to be kept on leads. Most restrictions in the area have already been confirmed, including measures inland and at beaches such as Sheringham, Overstrand, East Runton, and Walcott.

However, councillors will revisit regulations next week for several locations, including Mundesley beach, East Runton beach, a churchyard in Fakenham, a field in Bodham, a playing field in Salthouse, and a play area in Cromer.

In a report to councillors, officers highlighted the importance of controlling dogs, citing complaints and concerns about public health.

“The council receives regular complaints regarding dog control issues,” officers said.

“Dog fouling presents a risk to public health in terms of transmission of disease as well as a nuisance.

“Public safety, and enjoyment of public spaces for all persons requires that dogs are properly controlled. These PSPOs address that purpose.”

A recent public consultation on the proposals saw 13 people support the measures and eight oppose them.

Councillors are set to discuss the changes at their meeting on Monday, 1st December.
