A coastal church’s roof tiles will be replaced with the latest in solar technology.
All Saints Church in Mundesley will swap its tiles for ‘solar slates’ – panels designed to look like natural slate – after North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) gave the scheme the green light.
Excess power will be fed into the National Grid.
The panels will be used on the southern side while natural slate will be used opposite.
The Grade II listed church sits in a prominent position in the coastal village, on a clifftop overlooking the sea.
A speaker in supporter of the application told Thursday’s NNDC development committee it would be the only church in Norfolk to have solar slates and it will generate enough electricity to completely run the building.
Wendy Fredricks, ward member for Mundesley, described the plan as a “trailblazer for other churches” and a “great example of common sense prevailing”.
The application was unanimously approved.
First built between the 14th and 15th centuries, All Saints was completely reconstructed between 1899 and 1914 after standing in ruins for many years.
