RSPCA branch in Norfolk marks 'busiest ever year' amid cost-of-living crisis
The Mid Norfolk and North Suffolk branch rehomed over 600 animals last year
A branch of the RSPCA in Norfolk says its had its busiest ever year rehoming over 600 animals and donating six tonnes of pet food to people in need.
The Mid Norfolk and North Suffolk Branch says it had dozens of calls from people who've been forced to surrender animals they can't afford to keep, due to the cost of living crisis.
Throughout 2022 the branch helped to find new home for 637 animals and helped almost 400 people pay for their vets bills.
Animals rehomed included dogs and cats, as well as a tortoise, goats, birds and fish.
They also issued 1,110 neutering vouchers for cats, dogs and rabbits.
The branch also donated to 11 different foodbanks across Norfolk and Suffolk throughout the year.
Chloe Shorten, Head of Animal Welfare at the branch, said: "We understand it’s a difficult and scary time for many people due to the cost of living crisis and unfortunately rescue centres are inundated so we are having to prioritise the most needy to come into our care.
“We can help in other ways however such as with welfare vouchers, food bank parcels or education and We’re doing everything we can to keep pets in loving homes - rather than owners having to give up their beloved pets.”
Greg Brown, CEO of the branch added: “Many people do not realise we are a separate, independent branch and a local charity in Norfolk."
