Norfolk Police say they made 161 arrests during their Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving.

A total of 868 motorists were stopped as part of the month-long operation, which lasted from December 1 until January 1.

Of those 85 were arrested on suspicion of drink driving, 51 were questioned on suspicion of being behind the wheel under the influence of drugs.

Nine people were arrested for refusing to take drug or alcohol tests.

Of those who failed the tests, 79% were men. 19% were under the age of 25.

Giles Orpen-Smellie, Police & Crime Commissioner for Norfolk, said:

"It is disappointing that so many people choose to ignore the warnings issued by my policing colleagues and get behind the wheel while under the influence of drink or drugs.

"While officers will continue to clampdown on those intent on breaking the law, it is also about taking personal responsibility, and I would urge drivers to think twice before risking the lives of not only themselves but other road users.

"It is clear from my in-box and public meetings that road safety is a key concern for people across Norfolk."
