Norfolk MP says scrapping two-child benefit wouldn't make long-term difference
The Government say they've created new cross-government taskforce will develop an ambitious child poverty strategy to tackle the crisis
A Norfolk MP's telling us getting rid of the two-child benefit cap wouldn't make a long term difference.
It comes as charities are calling on the Government to scrap the cap - claiming it's one of the main drivers of child poverty.
"That's going to make a huge difference to families"
Labour's Ben Goldsborough represents South Norfolk:
He says Starmer's party are going to tackle it in other ways:
"It's not just talking about our welfare system, it's talking about work and education. The Government's plans to introduce free breakfast clubs, for every primary schools. That's going to make a huge difference to families across Norfolk with them not having to worry about that little bit of spending".
He says a tailored approach is need to tackle rural poverty:
"We need to be thinking about how we can ensure that communities that have previously been held-off aren't just viewed as a nice, pretty, leafy part of the world. Every place has it's unique need and challenges
What's the Government said on this?
A Government spokesperson said: "No child should be in poverty - that's why our new cross-government taskforce will develop an ambitious child poverty strategy to tackle the crisis.
"Alongside this urgent work, we will roll out free breakfast clubs in all primary schools to give children the best start in life, while delivering on a plan to grow the economy and make work pay for hardworking families across the country."
