A Norfolk MP and former government minister is set to earn almost £200,000 a year after taking on a series of extra jobs outside parliament.

Brandon Lewis, the MP for Great Yarmouth, has been employed by three companies, including as an adviser to a housebuilder.

The £180,000 a year he is set to make from the firms comes in addition to the £86,584 basic salary he gets as an MP.

In comparison, prime minister Rishi Sunak is entitled to claim around £164,951 each year for being prime minister.

The new roles come after a recent focus on MPs having second jobs and whether they can concentrate on their constituents and outside work.

Mr Lewis effectively gets paid £625 per hour for his additional jobs, almost what the median UK full-time employee gets paid in a week, which was £640 in April 2022.

The roles were revealed in the MP’s register of interests, which was updated earlier this month. He joined all the companies between January and April this year.

The roles, which are all for eight hours work a month, are:

Director of Woodlands Schools Ltd, which runs private primary schools, paying £60,000 a year plus the use of a company car valued at £10,000.

Adviser to the CEO and board of Thakeham Homes, a property developer based in Billingshurst, a village in West Sussex.

Adviser to FM Conway, a civil engineering contractor specialising in highways and other infrastructure work, based in Sevenoaks, Kent.

Mr Lewis was previously a director at Woodlands until 2012. The company is based in Brentwood where Mr Lewis was a councillor until he resigned in 2009.

Mr Lewis was contacted for comment.

Earlier this year Keir Starmer, the leader Labour party, stopped short of calling for a ban on MPs having second jobs but said new rules were needed.
