A Norfolk MP has dismissed calls for a snap general election, after Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister yesterday afternoon.

The South-West Norfolk MP stood down after being at Number 10 for 45 days- saying that she could not deliver the mandate she was elected on.

"We absolutely have a huge mandate to work for the people of Broadland"

Jerome Mayhew is the MP for Broadland.

He says there's no need for a general election:

"We have got this enormous election mandate from the 2019 manifesto. If we focus on that and we deliver on that, then we absolutely have a huge mandate to work for the people of Broadland and the country.

"People want us to deliver and that is what I'm slightly frustrated by, we've been blown off course by events and we need to get back to what we promised we'd deliver and do exactly that. Then at the end of this parliament who can put ourselves up for an election and deserve to be heard

"I think we need to get all wings of the party working together"

He told us what any leadership hopeful has to do- to get his support:

"At the last leadership election, which was not very long ago, I was a big fan of Penny Mordaunt and I campaigned on behalf of her. But I want to see who is standing and what coalition of authority can come together, because I think we need to get all wings of the party working together and united around the common agreement of delivering on the 2019 manifesto.

"We need economic and political stability and from my perspective there is nothing stable about Labour being in charge of the economy. We need to take the hit that we have done, we need to unite around a new leader and get stability in place running into an election in 2024".
