Norfolk MP: Put council housing at centre of 'new towns' in county
South Norfolk District Council's applied for a 'new town' to be built locally
Put council housing at the centre of 'new towns', is key to attracting and keeping people in Norfolk- according to a local MP.
Ben Goldsborough tells us he's meeting with the housing minister to push for a new site of at least 10 thousand homes- to be built, locally.
South Norfolk District Council's applied for a 'new town' to be built locally. It's leader, Daniel Elmer says doing this could help bring house prices down, in the area.
The Campaign to Protect Rural England say building this would damage county's landscape.
"That's what undermines people's confidence in new house-building"
He represents South Norfolk:
"A lot of us remember the Post-War new towns, that have got a reputation of being a bit of a concrete jungle.
"But we've moved on so much from there and now we can talk about environmentally-sustainable buildings that can produce more energy, than they consume, which can then be put back into the grid".
Ben told us why a new approach is needed:
"What I've noticed over the years is that because we've gone for the 'village cluster' scheme, which is just bolting more houses onto the side of towns & villages, it just puts a greater strain on services. That's what undermines people's confidence in new house-building".
What's the Government said on this?
The Government says an independent taskforce is now looking at where new towns will be built.
