A charity shop in Norfolk's raised thousands of pounds, by auctioning off a specialist book donated to them.

The tattered tome was handed to No8 The Old Bookshop in Downham Market, and immediately spotted by manager Sarah Cox, who thought it looked like a special volume.

After some research, aided by volunteers at the shop, she was proved right.

It turned about to be an 1847 book on Euclidian Geometry.

Recently, staff and volunteers from the West Norfolk Deaf Association, which runs No8, gathered to watch the book go under the hammer in Edinburgh.

It sold for ÂŁ4400, all of which will go to the charity.

“It was so exciting. There were lots of bids for the book and it exceeded the estimated price. We knew it was special,” said Sarah.

“We were cheering every bid, it was amazing to see the amount keep going up."

Charity manager Anna Pugh said: “We are always very grateful for the kind donations we receive at the bookshop, and for the hard work of our fabulous team of volunteers.

"I always say that every book donated makes a difference and this one certainly will. The money will help us continue to support people with hearing difficulties in West Norfolk enormously.”
