Norfolk County Council is being encouraged to join other councils in declaring a national climate emergency,

Over 70% of other District, County, Unitary and Metropolitan Councils have already made the commitment.

Friends of the Earth Norwich say that this sense of urgency is not recognised by Norfolk CC.

Dr Sarah Eglington is the group Coordinator: “It would be impossible for them to genuinely acknowledge we’re in a climate crisis whilst planning yet another new road like the Western Link Road, which they’ve recently approved.

“There’s lots of other new road building schemes within the region and they all come with associated increases in capacity, congestion, pollution and carbon emissions.

“The current climate emergency is the greatest ever threat to our existence. It’s a disaster for the natural world.

"A comprehensive climate plan is long overdue, But instead of doing this Norfolk county council keeps making climates wrecking decisions.

"What we need is for the council to declare a climate emergency, and then crucially to follow this up with an ambitious climate action plan which will rapidly reduce carbon emissions and create a fairer, greener Norfolk."

Friends of the Earth Norwich have created a petition to call for Norfolk County Council to create a climate action plan.

Andy Grant, Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste at the County Council said: "We have agreed an ambitious Environmental Policy, to become a carbon neutral authority by 2030. That shows we are serious about this issue.”
