Norfolk County Council to consider almost £3.2m investment in Independent Living scheme in South Wootton

Norfolk County Council's Cabinet proposes nearly £3.2m of investment to develop specialist housing for people 55 and over in South Wootton.

Consisting of 56 one-bed and 21 two-bed apartments, with care and support available on site, the 77 new affordable homes for local people will all be wheelchair accessible and nearby to a newly built GP practice, local shops and bus services.

Councillor Alison Thomas, cabinet member for Adult Services at Norfolk County Council, said: “Research has demonstrated that Independent Living helps reduce falls and GP appointments as well as improvements in wellbeing which ties in with the council’s priority to support residents to be independent, resilient and well.

“South Wootton Independent Living will provide more choice for individuals about how their housing and care needs are met as they grow older.”

The project will be discussed by Norfolk County Council's Cabinet, when it meets on Monday 1 September.

If funding is approved, the scheme will be managed by Housing 21, a leading provider of safe, quality and affordable properties for older people and a CQC-registered care provider.

The proposed scheme would be the sixth delivered under Norfolk’s £29 million Independent Living Programme, launched in 2018 to address the identified need for 1,135 affordable Independent Living homes across the county by 2028.

Meadow Walk in Fakenham and Swallowtail Place in Acle have already opened, while construction is underway on schemes in Hunstanton, Harleston and Swaffham and are all due to open their doors to residents over the next two years. If approved, the new development in South Wootton would bring Norfolk County Council’s investment in Independent Living for West Norfolk to over £6 million.
