Norfolk and Norwich Hospital has been given the go ahead to build a new orthopaedic surgery unit.

Its expected the new Norfolk and Norwich Orthopaedic Centre will be finished this summer on the main hospital site.

South Norfolk District Council has granted full planning permission.

The facility is set to cost over £11m and will include 2 dedicated operating theatres and a 21 bed ward for patients.

The hospital is still trying to raise cash towards the project.

It's hoped the new unit will help clear the backlog created by Covid-19.

James Wimhurst, orthopaedic surgeon and clinical lead for the project said:

“We are excited to see the Norfolk and Norwich Orthopaedic Centre receive its planning permission, taking the project one step closer to delivering care in a new and exciting facility.

“This will offer a fantastic addition to our orthopaedic work offering patients first class care in a dedicated unit adjacent to the hospital. We are also recruiting additional doctors, nurses and other specialist staff to help run the centre.”
