NNUH staff step up to help patients at mealtime
More than 70 are involved
More than 70 members of staff have signed up to assist patients at mealtimes at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
Clare Simpson, Administration Assistant in our Comms Department, is one of them, supporting patients twice a week in Mattishall ward.
She said:
"This has been a really rewarding experience, I have learned a lot about patients and seen the whole situation from a different perspective.
"Before my first shift I was a bit anxious as I had no experience helping another adult to eat but thanks to the help of staff on the ward and the Volunteer Co-ordinator, I had a very positive experience.
"The most important thing is to go slowly and let them guide you. Some people might need help sitting in the right position and others might just want somebody to chat to while they are have their meal.
"Patients are anxious, a day in the hospital, with no contact with relatives, can be very long and they are so grateful for the help they receive.
"This experience has been a real eye-opener. I saw how relentless work on the ward is and why sometimes staff might not have the time to sit down with every single patient during mealtimes.
"If my dad or my granny was in hospital, I’d want someone to give them some help, and I understand how important volunteers are. It’s a shame they can’t be allowed in due to the current restrictions. I think even when they return I’ll continue to offer help, it’s really worthwhile."
Everybody who has volunteered to assist patients is provided with adequate protection in the forms of masks, a visor, an apron and gloves and are provided training on donning and doffing these correctly. Flexible training is provided as well as a guided tour of the ward and the opportunity to observe a mealtime.
