New sea defences approved for Hemsby after coastal erosion destroys homes
The local council has finally given the go ahead to plans for a new rock berm at Hemsby
Plans for new coastal defences in the village of Hemsby have been approved by Great Yarmouth councillors.
The long-awaited proposals include an up to 1.3km long rock berm along the seafront, which would be 20m wide and 3m high.
A new beach access ramp would also be built at Hemsby Gap, while existing 'Hexiblock' defences will be relocated for use within the new berm.
It comes after high spring tides caused rapid damage to the cliffside earlier this month, leading to the loss of several homes.
One local man, Lance Martin, used heavy machinery to pull his home to safety from the cliff edge.
