A man has been jailed for seven and a half years for the sexual assault of a woman in Norwich, as she walked home from a night out in the city.

62 year old Paul Bamforth, of Jasmine Court in Attleborough, will also serve eight years on licence after admitting to sexual assault by penetration and robbery at Norwich Crown Court.

It follow the attack, at around 11:45pm on June 16 this year.

The woman was walking along Wherry Road when she was pushed to the floor by Bamforth, who sexually assaulted her and stole her underwear.

In a victim impact statement, the woman wrote: "Although physically I survived, mentally it has destroyed me.

"I no longer recognise myself, I feel numb and dead inside".

Investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Mark Joyce of Norfolk Police, said: “Bamforth is a dangerous sexual predator who has now been removed from our streets for a considerable length of time.

“No sentence of any length will heal the mental wounds caused by Bamforth. His victim will have to live with his actions for the rest of her life.

"I do, however, hope that today will mark the next step in her healing process and provide her with some closure.

“I would like to reassure the community that this type of offending is a rare occurrence in Norfolk.

"As a police force, we are dedicated to supporting victims of sexual assault and will continue to work to put these offenders behind bars.”
