Multi-million pound highway improvements for Norfolk
Improvement programme continues in Norfolk
A multi-million pound programme of road maintenance will be continuing in Norfolk this year, with major schemes getting underway in Great Yarmouth, Downham Market and Stalham.
The Department of Transport announced Norfolk would be getting £22m of funding towards these schemes in May 2020.
The county received more than any other in the East of England for maintenance and repairs to local bridges, roads, pavements, and cycle paths.
What's the money being spent on?
The mechanical and electrical upgrades to the Haven Bridge in Great Yarmouth is the largest scheme, costing £1.2m.
Some upgrades were completed in the Autumn, but other work, which will hopefully resolve issues with the bridge's lifting system, is set to start next month and take 13 weeks to complete.
Two resurfacing schemes are due to be starting in March.
£140,000 is going to be used to resurface the approach to the level crossing on the A1122 in Downham Market.
And in Stalham, Stepping Stone Lane will be resurfaced at a cost of £165,000.
Maintenance will also continue across the county to repair roads and prevent future potholes.
Cllr Martin Wilby, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure at Norfolk County Council, said: “Despite the added difficulties brought by the pandemic the highways team has completed an impressive amount of work over the past year.
"The extra money for Norfolk means we can do more to maintain and improve our highway network to help support sustainable growth.”
