Some of the lowest paid staff at the University of East Anglia will see their wages go up next month, earlier than planned.

Around 550 staff will see their monthly income increase from August in line with the National Pay Award, wiith another boost due to come in July 2024.

The rest of the staff at the UEA will receive their pay award in two installments - the first coming next January and the second to follow in July.

The UEA decided to defer wage increases earlier this year with the institution facing a multi-million pound budget black hole and asking some staff to take voluntary redundancy.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Christine Bovis-Cnossen said: “Deferring the implementation of the pay award was a difficult decision."

"We committed to keeping this under review and we’re pleased to be able to bring forward the first round of payments for our lowest paid staff.”

The university insists it will only make compulsory redundancies 'as a last resort'.
