The county council say they’re still taking extra steps to stop the spread, but we all still have our part to play.

Norfolk County Council says that regular testing, following the hands, face, space rules and getting your vaccinations will help to curb the spread of the Indian variant and other forms of Covid in the area.

It’s after national concern at a rise in Indian variant cases in certain parts of the country.

Although Norfolk has had no new cases of the Indian variant this week – and has only had around 10 to 15 cases in total - it is encouraging residents and holidaymakers to take practical steps, to keep everyone safe.

Director of public health, Dr Louise Smith, said: “Certain parts of the country have seen a rise in Indian variant cases and, with no travel restrictions into or out of those areas, we should continue to take sensible steps to follow the rules”

Dr. Smith is encouraging everyone to have a free lateral flow test, twice a week, to reassure themselves and their loved ones.

Tests are available from the Government website and from Norfolk libraries and pharmacies. If you test positive, you must self-isolate and take a PCR test.

The newly reeelcted council leader, Councillor Andrew Proctor has said: “We're on the journey of getting out of the whole of the restrictions by June 21st”

“There is room for cautious optimism”

It comes amid national fears that the so-called 'freedom day' on June 21st is in doubt due to the threat of the Indian variant of coronavirus.

The Government is facing serious questions about whether scrapping social distancing next month could lead to a third wave of the pandemic.
