Emergency repairs have commenced on Hunstanton Promenade after a sinkhole was discovered today, prompting safety measures to protect the public.

A section of the promenade has been fenced off, and local authorities are urging visitors to heed guidance and steer clear of restricted zones.

Cllr Sandra Squire, Cabinet Member for Environment and Coastal, explained that recent adverse weather and coastal flooding contributed to the deterioration of the promenade.

While local businesses and residents are not directly affected, the portion of the walkway was deemed unsafe for pedestrians.

A geotechnical report from last year highlighted the necessity for significant repairs along the promenade.

Despite patching and rejointing efforts being carried out recently, the report indicated that more extensive intervention is needed.

Findings from the report were communicated to borough councillors, Hunstanton Town Councillors, promenade traders, and other stakeholders.

In response, a weight restriction was promptly implemented, and a feasibility study commissioned.

The area between the Waterside Bar and the Oasis remains closed off for safety.

“These sea defences are nearing the end of their serviceable life. We are now undertaking emergency repairs; public safety remains our top priority,” Cllr Squire said.

This incident has further highlighted the need for substantial investment in Hunstanton’s sea defences, she added.
