A Norfolk council has given the green light for a former tourism centre on the coast to become a dental surgery.

North Norfolk District Council’s Liberal Democrat-controlled cabinet agreed to the measure, deciding this was the best option for the site in Cromer’s Meadow Road car park.

The facility was shut earlier this year as part of a raft of cost-saving measures and was advertised on the open market as a lease opportunity for businesses.

Eight businesses came forward expressing interest in taking on the site, which also included a bakery, cafe, osteopath and a real ale pub.

But officials deemed an offer from a dental firm to be the best move financially.

It is hoped it will also help address longstanding concerns about access to dental treatment in the region.

The closure of the venue is also estimated to save the council £170,000 a year in running costs.

Councillors decided to close it due to falling numbers of visitors using the facility, who instead are choosing to visit online sources of information.
