East charity urges families to support those with eating disorders over Christmas
BEAT says the festive season can be a tricky time for those who are affected by this
An East charity is urging those close to people with eating disorders to create support plans for those with eating disorders this Christmas.
BEAT tell us that this festive period can be a "distressing time" for those who are suffering from these type of disorders.
"The meal-time is just one part of the day"
Edward Emond is from the group, who are based in Norwich:
"Come up with a plan with somebody that you trust, thinking about things that will help you distract from the pressures.
"It's also important to know that it's okay to regularly take breaks and find spaces where you can go and unwind.
"Having people around you who know your triggers and can spot the signs that you might be struggling can be really helpful.
"Also knowing that the meal-time is just one part of the day is really important. Taking the time to enjoy the other parts of the day where food isn't so prominent can be really helpful.
"Find time for yourself and putting boundaries in place as well, so that you know there's only so much you or anyone can do."
"The New Year brings along a lot of unhelpful messages"
"We know that the New Year brings along a lot of unhelpful messages about dieting, body-weight and shape.
"This can be quite distressing for people who are at the early stages of having complicated feelings about themselves.
"People are recognising that eating disorders can present themselves in different ways.
It's not just the stereotypical image people may have- the majority of those with these dis-orders are actually of a normal weight or are over-weight.
"There's more understanding and acceptance of the challenges that people face, and there's a lot of people offering support".
