A Norwich man who rode an e-scooter whilst disqualified from driving has been sentenced.

Johnathon Phillips, aged 40, of Marshall Road, Norwich appeared before Norwich Magistrates Court on Thursday 20th October.

He pleaded guilty to disqualified driving on an e-scooter.

The sentence relates to an incident on 1st May 2022 when Phillips was riding an e-scooter on Aylsham Road and Suckling Avenue.

He has been sentenced to a further period of disqualification of 12 months, a community order of 240 Hours Unpaid Work, £105 costs and £95.00 victim surcharge.

Roads and Armed Policing Inspector, Simon Jones said: “This sentence acts as a reminder that if you are using an e-scooter whilst disqualified from driving, you are breaking the law.”

“As e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles, they are subject to the same rules as any other motor vehicle (eg. cars). Privately owned e-scooters cannot be insured as they are not roadworthy and therefore, they cannot be used anywhere other than private land.”

“We continue to engage and educate users on the laws surrounding e-scooters but persistent offences will result in appropriate enforcement action.”
