A police cordon will remain on Lynn Road in Wisbech "for some time" while officers carry out a detailed investigation to identify the remains and find out how they came to be there.

Officers were called at 8.30am on Sunday 18 May after a passer-by reported finding the bones.

Police are checking missing people cases and other investigations to understand who the remains belong to.

Senior Investigating Officer Mark Tate said: “There is a lot of work to do before we can give a clear update, and I ask you not to guess during this time.” He added: “You will see officers at the scene in the coming days as the investigation continues.”

It will take a while to identify the bones.

Mum of missing man hoping for 'peace'

The mother of a man who went missing in 2007 has said she is “hoping for some peace” after the remains were found near where he disappeared.

Terry McSpadden, a 24-year-old father of two at the time, was last seen on 2 March 2007 after spending the evening in the Locomotive pub in Wisbech, near the Norfolk-Cambridgeshire border.

Helen Thrower, Mr McSpadden’s mother, said police had contacted the family about the find. She said: “It’s too early to say whether it’s Terry or not. Me and other people whose family members are missing, we’re hoping for some peace. Until we get some identification, we can’t know.”

Andy Guy, Norfolk Police’s cold case manager, said: “Terry’s family including his mother and two children have never had closure. They have no idea where he is, what happened to him, or why. They have lived with this grief and uncertainty for 18 years.

“While this is a long time ago I have no doubt there are people out there who do know, or suspect, what happened to Terry. I understand that people may not have wished to engage with the police in 2007 but having knowledge of what happened to Terry may lay heavy on someone’s conscience. For Terry, his mother, and children now would be the time to tell that information.

“Terry was an attentive and loving father which makes any idea that he simply left the area all the more unlikely and there has been no proof of life after 2 March 2007.”
