There's calls from a local authority for 'common sense' changes, that will stop the proliferation of gambling shops here.

West Norfolk Borough Council has voted to join a coalition of decision-makers, who are calling for the Government to act.

The group has put forward a six-point plan that would toughen regulations that include more restrictions on advertising, the ability to refuse new premises on welfare and safety grounds and halt any proposals to further liberalise adult gaming centres.

"This is a serious concern for us"

Councillor Deborah Heneghan deputy leader of the Labour Group at West Norfolk Borough Council:

"'Aim to Permit' is the thing that we are trying to change. When this is enforced it requires councils to regulate the industry in a way to that seeks to permit it versus prevent it.

"If you do reject an application this can result in very long and expensive appeals process".

"Public Health are now estimating that there's one gambling related suicide every day. This is a serious concern for us and it turns out that we at local council have little power to stop it".

More details:

Nationwide, 30% of all adult gaming centres are located in areas with the highest levels of deprivation.

Whereas the 14 wealthiest local authorities do not have a single slot machine venue, a Guardian study has found.

Currently, there are limited powers available to prevent an influx of such establishments, some of which can stay open 24 hours a day.

Section 153 of the Gambling Act 2005 enshrines the ‘Aim to Permit’ principle, which requires councils to approve gambling licences where minimum criteria are met, regardless of local community opposition.

In King’s Lynn, there have been two new premises opening in the centre of town.

An Admiral Casino is due to open at the former Blue Inc clothing store and two 24-hour Merkur Slots venues are located nearby, with another adult gaming centre located at the nearby bus station.
