More homes in Broadland get food waste collection services
Almost half of households in the district are now part of the scheme
1,700 more homes across Broadland will get their food waste collected from this week - as the council expands its schemes.
Parts of Thorpe St Andrew, Sprowston, Old Catton, Spixworth and Drayton will now be added to the scheme by Broadland District Council.
It was the first local authority in Norfolk to carry out separate food waste collections in 2008, which started as a six-month, government-funded trial serving about 6,000 homes.
Since then, about 18,000 tonnes of food waste has been collected and the service is offered to more than 30,000 homes – almost half of all households in Broadland.
Wasted food contributes 8-10% of total manmade greenhouse gas emissions and roughly one third of food produced around the world is wasted, contributing significantly to climate change according to WRAP.
