Some people in Norfolk will soon be paying nearly 5 percent more in council tax.

Breckland Council is set to raise the amount paid by Band D properties by £4.95.

Authorities say most won't pay this much more, with over three quarters of homes in the area falling into bands A-C.

Council tax charged by Breckland Council is set to rise by £4.95 for Band D households this year, an increase of 4.7%.

The district authority’s portion of the bill, which has historically been the lowest of its kind in the country, will rise to £108.63 for the year for Band D properties.

The Conservative-run council’s draft budget for the coming financial year was discussed at a cabinet meeting on Monday, January 9.

Philip Cowen, the council’s cabinet member for finance, said the increase for most residents would be less than the £4.95 Band D increase.

He said: “Within Breckland, 76pc of homes are within bands A-C, and thus the majority of households who pay the full amount of council tax will pay less than £1.86 per week for the statutory services, and importantly the discretionary services, that your council provides.”

No cuts are to be made to any of Breckland’s services.

Mr Cowen said the authority was doing this despite the “incredible pressure” on public spending, with inflation at around 9.7% as of November.

The council plans instead to utilise other income streams and find more efficient ways of working, to ensure a balanced budget.
