Breckland councillors to be updated on climate progress

Councillors will hear of the Breckland authority's progress towards a greener future at a cabinet meeting today (1 February).
Members will be updated on work by the newly-appointed Environment & Climate Change Officer, and confirmation that the council's first ever Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy will be presented to councillors at the end of the month.
The strategy is currently being finalised following feedback from residents during a public consultation at the end of last year.
As part of steps taken since declaring a climate emergency, the council has switched to a green energy tariff for all its buildings and is also allowing some grass verges to grow longer to create bee-friendly habitats.
Under a new policy, housing developers must also install more bird boxes and other green features as part of the planning application process.
Councillor Ian Sherwood, Breckland Council's Sustainability Strategy Champion, said: "We have already made good progress in making the council a more environmentally-sustainable organisation and making the whole district a greener place to live. I'd like to thank everybody who has contributed to our strategy and I look forward to discussing the draft plans with members next month."
