We're again being reminded not to leave rubbish on Norfolk's beaches - that includes old fishing tackle.

It comes after a seal was spotted on Horsey Beach with what looked like nylon fishing net around its neck.

Thankfully, rescuers were able to catch the animal and cut it out of the netting. As the net hadn't been around its neck long enough to cut its skin, the seal was able to be released.

Rescuers cut the seal free from the netting

A spokesperson for Friends of Horsey Seals said:

"It is a complicated issue as there appears to be a lot of litter floating g in the sea as well. Seals are curious and playful and often swim through floating debris. If they are still growing whatever is stuck around their necks will start tightening and cutting into their flesh. Sadly we are rescuing an increasing number of entangled seals. If anyone sees a seal with something caught around it’s neck they should call the Friends of Horsey Seals rescue team on 07706 314514."

Dog walkers are also being reminded to keep their pets away from seals on the beach, as either animal could give the other a nasty bite if they get too curious.
