Arrest made after woman raped in Bolton town centre

Police were called in the early hours of this morning

A man has been arrested in connection with a reported rape on a woman in the early hours in Bolton.

At around 2.20am today (20 April 2022), officers were called to a report of a rape on a woman in her 30s to the rear of the Newspaper building on Bradshawgate.

Officers attended and immediately launched an investigation and following enquiries, a 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in custody at this time.

A cordon is currently in place whilst a number of lines of enquiry are following up by detectives.

Detective Inspector David Sinclair, from GMP’s Bolton district, said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the victim who is understandably distressed and receiving the appropriate care and support.

“We currently have one person in custody and I’d like to reassure the community and those nearby that we’re carrying out a thorough, detailed investigation and officers will be in the area today following up a number of lines of enquiry.
