Greater Manchester leaders call for urgent summit

Leaders in Greater Manchester plan to come together to hold an urgent summit on knife crime.

Over the last three weekend, three teenagers have been fatally stabbed in Salford, Tameside and Trafford, of which Alan was the youngest.

Over the weekend, police have responding with a big increase in stop and searches, but the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, says it'll will take more than that.

"What it suggests to me is that clearly there are more weapons being carried on our streets, but also that situations are escalating more quickly", said Mayor Burnham.

"Something is changing and we have got to be prepared to deal with it in the short term, but also the long term as well.

"One thing we have been piloting across Greater Manchester is a community lead approach to tackling serious violence, particularly among young people. The fact of the matter is the intelligence on who is carrying weapons and who is pose a risk may be held within local communities. What we have to do is empower communities to manage those issues within."
