Tameside man sentenced for possession of firearms and drugs

A man has been jailed after firearms, ammunition and cocaine was seized in Wythenshawe.

Steven Powell from Brinnington pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without a certificate and possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply at an earlier hearing.

Today, Powell was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

Last year, officers from Hyde neighbourhood policing team attended an address of Powell’s on Bideford Drive and executed a warrant.

Once inside they discovered a sawn-off double barrelled shot and shot gun cartridges. Armed response officers were called to the address to make the gun safe and a black handgun, along with ammunition and a silencer were further recovered. Cocaine, with a street value of £643.00 and purity of 77% was also seized.

Detective Inspector David Loughlin of GMP’s Tameside team said: “I hope that the sentence passed here today will send a clear message that we remain very much active in our fight rid our streets of firearms.

“Guns bring devastation to the people who live in Greater Manchester and thankfully, these weapons are now put of the hands of criminals.

“I would like to encourage the public to continue to work with police to help make our communities a safer place.”
