An anonymous shopper in the U.S. has apologised after their angry note was shared more than 12,000 times on Facebook.

The angry message accused a woman of taking up a parking space meant for veterans.

We’re all familiar with the annoyance it causes when people park where they’re not supposed to, but one angry shopper took it a step further and left a message on Rebecca Landis Hayes’s car in North Carolina.

Rebecca then shared a picture of the note she found on her windscreen. It said ‘This parking is for veterans, lady. Learn to read and have some respect.’

In a post which has since had more than 12,000 shares, Rebecca called out the anonymous writer, saying she had spent eight years in the United States Navy. Rebecca wrote that she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the positive responses her post received and that she hopes it will remind people ‘that there is no ONE Veteran type’.

In an unusual turn of events, since going viral Rebecca received a note of apology from the writer who admitted they ‘lost their cool’.

They wrote 'I've seen so many young people park in retired vets spaces, along with handicap lately and I lost my cool. (sic)

'I'm sorry you're the one who got the result of that angry moment. I know it was a mistake and I'm glad I saw your post.

‘I immediately felt horrible about a situation where I assumed I was standing up for someone. You didn't deserve that and I hope you can accept this apology.'

The apology has attracted many positive messages on social media, with people praising the person for having the humility to admit they were wrong.
