Police in Greater Manchester have confirmed details on the human remains that were found in a park in Salford.

A member of the public discovered the remains whilst walking through Kersal Dale in Salford on Thursday evening (April 4th).

Following this, Greater Manchester Police launched a murder investigation, working with local forces in Salford to piece the events together.

Specialists from the force's forensics units have worked with search teams and local dog units to work to find other parts of the body, after the torso of a person was found in a plastic bag.

Now, investigators have confirmed that the torso that was discovered belonged to a man who was aged in his 40s.

As well as this, forensic investigators revealed that the man had only been dead for a number of days when his torso was dumped in the wetlands.

Police are continuing their enquiries to determine who the man was - including DNA tests to help establish the identity of the victim.

Greater Manchester Police's District Commander for Salford Chief Super Intendent Tony Creely said that the force's main goal is to identify the man and support his family following his death.

"This is a tragic case which is moving at pace and, thanks to forensic tests, we are able to confirm that the victim is a man who could not have survived," he said.

“At the heart of our investigation is this man and his family. We are using all forensic techniques available to identify him as soon as we can so we are able to support his loved ones during this devastating time."

Mr Creely also thanked the public for their information and cooperation since the investigation took place. However, he warned that there would be disruption to the local area for some time as investigations continue.

“There remain a number of unknowns around this case, but we are working diligently and respectfully to provide answers as soon as we are able," he added. "This will take time and we will continue to provide updates of significance when we can."

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Police are urging anyone who may have any information to get in touch as soon as possible to help officers with their enquiries.

Anyone who believes that they witnessed something suspicious in the Kersal Dale area of the borough is being asked to contact the force, quoting incident reference number 2695 on April 4th.
