A leading child health expert from Salford University has backed calls for a ban on the sale of energy drinks to children aged 16 and under.

Professor Ailsa Parsons says she agrees with a new study which found children consuming energy drinks could be harmful to them.

The study written in conjuction with the charity Action on Sugar notes that using energy drinks from a young age could lead to long-term problems for children and may even cause binge-drinking and drug use.

Professor Parsons says the study raises important points as to why some children feel the need to use energy drinks and whether parents are ensuring their kids get enough sleep.
