A football club in Bury has posted a tribute to a man who died after his car crashed into a building in Heywood, Lancashire in the early hours of Monday morning (1 July).

Ramsbottom United Football Club wrote they were “truly devastated” by the news of the sudden passing of Will Place, a member of the clubs’ media team since 2021.

The 23-year-old, who recently graduated in sports journalism, died after his Dacia Sandero collided with a property on York Street at around 3.15am.

The club described him as a “hugely likable” character, who would become a regular at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.

He would remain with the club until late 2023, when he would step down to focus on his university studies, running a small delivery business, managing a local football team, as well as continuing with his position with the Rams and working alongside his grandfather on a farm.

The post wrote: “He will leave a huge hole in the club. His infectious smile, compelling laugh and an engaging, cheery and funny demeanour made him a hugely popular member of the Rammy family.

“The thoughts of everyone at Ramsbottom United Football Club go to his family and friends at this desperately sad time.”

Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anybody with footage of the incident to come forward.

Anyone with any information, CCTV, or dashcam footage is asked to contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting log number 299 of 01/07/24.
