Greater Manchester Police have arrested a man in his 40s in connection with a series of rapes in Manchester city centre.

Officers have been investigating a number of incidents that date as far back as February of 2024, and believe that the rapes are connected by the same man.

It is believed that the suspect, who has not been named, would target inebriated men and women, rape them and then steal their belongings before taking off.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday morning (July 21st) and remains in police custody, where he is being questioned by officers.

Speaking on the case, Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt from GMP's Rape and Other Sexual Offences team, said that they are treating the cases very seriously.

"Our specialist officers have been and are continuing to support those involved in these incidents, and we are doing all we can to provide the appropriate care that they need at this time," he said.

"These are truly horrific crimes, no one should feel unsafe when walking the streets of Greater Manchester.

"We remain committed to achieving justice for all victims of rape and we do not tolerate any form of sexual violence in our communities."

He added that any instance of rape or sexual assault should be reported to the police as soon as possible.

"Every report will be thoroughly investigated, and we will ensure that you and your loved ones are fully supported every step of the way as we seek justice," he went on to say.
