Police have warned motorists against getting out of their vehicles on motorways, following reports of drivers playing football on the hard shoulder of the M61 near Bolton.

It is believed to have happened while traffic was stopped on Monday night (September 02), with officers warning "someone is going to get hurt".

People were also seen "walking along the carriageway", according to North West Motorway Police.

The incident comes just days after motorists were seen leaving their vehicles during huge queues on the M6 in Lancashire.

Lancashire Police said: " "Sadly within a few minutes, a number of motorists held in the blocks thought it was acceptable to get out of their vehicles to see what was going on.

"Some people allowed their children to run freely on the carriageway and others began to play frisbee and football."
