Miles of smiles for the Manchester Marathon

Athletes and charity runners race the region's roads in the 40th Manchester Marathon.

Runners came from far and wide to pound the region's roads for the 40th Manchester Marathon.

Steven Bayton, from Halifax took the men's title in the 26.2 mile course in 2.22.34 while Stockport Harriers’ Kelly Crickmore won the women's race in 2.48.04.

Wheelchair racer Jim Smith was first over the finishing line outside Old Trafford cricket ground. Thousands of other competitors were raising money for charity and there was the usual field of fancy dress participants collecting cash from the crowd.

The route through Sale,Timperley, Altrincham, Urmston and Streford was lined with family and friends of those taking part in the Manchester sunshine.

Loretto Ros Vicente travelled from Madrid to take part and said; "It was brilliant. People were amazing and the weather was wonderful, I couldn't believe my eyes!"
