The Mayor of Greater Manchester is going to consult the public on whether the Clean Air Zone cameras should be used by Police.

The scheme's been scrapped, but the cameras are already fitted, being used at the moment to support officers after a crime has been committed.

Andy Burnham said: "We will be launching a consultation soon, asking for peoples views on whether or not the cameras should be made available to Greater Manchester Police.

"I would hope that they would support that proposal.

"In the future, if the Greater Manchester public support this proposal, it'll be used in a real time situation when crimes are being committed, making the public here even safer.

"That will be investment that pays for itself many times over in Greater Manchester because already GMP have used that camera data to solve some of the most serious crime.

"So in the end, it's a been sorry saga (the Clean Air Zone) in some ways but we stood up for Greater Manchester residents."

The process of removing over 1000 CAZ signs across Greater Manchester has begun.

The signs were installed alongside the cameras as part of the scheme which aimed to charge drivers of high polluting vehicles.
