A school in Manchester has been forced to close after a dead rat was found inside.

St Philip's Church of England Primary School initially closed on Wednesday 13th December over 'environmental concerns' caused by a strong smell.

Head teacher Mr Edwards posted an updated statement on the school's website last night - explaining that professionals had come across a 'single rat carcass'.

*"Dear Parents and carers. Thank you for your understanding regarding the necessary closure of school today and tomorrow. I felt it was right to do so because, at the time of closing, a strong smell was affecting the school environment and I was concerned that this would have a detrimental effect on the children.*

*"The situation was being investigated by professionals at the time and a single rat carcass was discovered in the building. Today I am, as a precaution, having school thoroughly investigated.*

*"The kitchens have been examined already and are fine and the rest of school will be looked at tomorrow. I am confident that experts will make sure that school is safe for reopening as planned on Monday.*

*"I thank you again for your patience and understanding in this matter and, as always, my first concern is for the safety and well being of the children in our care.*

*"We look forward to seeing everyone as usual on Monday morning. Regards, Mr. Edwards."*

A team of pest control officers have been brought in to deal with the suspected infestation and the school will be open to all year groups as normal on Monday morning (18th December).
