Manchester's economy has been given a huge lift thanks to cycling according to a new report.

As the city bathes in the fee good factor of the olympic successes- in no small measure thanks to the naitonal cycling centre- cycling bosses say the past six years have seen economic growth thanks to people getting on their bike.

Peter Haymes, British Cycling Recreation Manager for North West:

“We are really proud to have been working with Manchester City Council and TfGM for the last 8 years to grow recreational cycling across Greater Manchester. As the Home of British Cycling we have a special affinity with the city and it’s been wonderful to witness the marked increase in popularity of cycling and participation at all levels across the region. The beauty of cycling is that it has so many benefits, not just to the happy cyclist on their bike but also to public health, sustainable transport, the environment and of course the wider economy. The figures we have released today help to back this up and they look set to increase year-on-year as British Cycling moves into an exciting new era from 2017 with our new principal partner.

Our mantra here is ‘Inspiration to Participation’ and hopefully there are lots of people across Greater Manchester feeling inspired to get their bikes out of the shed. There are loads of ways we at British Cycling can support you in your journey back onto two wheels, or even just to cycle a little more often. Check out our website www.goskyride.com for lots of led ride opportunities, all free of charge and for all abilities.”
